Lecturing

Sociology of Gender, University of Wisconsin–Madison: Summer 2020
Course description: Sociology challenges us to analyze and question what we see as "normal" or "the way the world works." While many in daily life use gender to refer specifically to women, sociologists of gender use the term in a broader sense: gender is a power relationship, rather than an individual's identity. This course invites students to critically examine how gender ideologies shape themselves, their interactions, and the institutions and cultures they live in, and how they can impact institutions and cultures through individual and collective action. Course syllabus.
Qualitative Feedback
"I've learned a lot. It's been interesting to understand so much of what I've taken as common sense as social constructions of gender."

"The structure of this course is really nice. The modules are easy to navigate and the deadlines are very clear. The discussion roles are nice especially the counterargument advisers. It really makes me look at the argument in a different perspective. I really like reading about other people's perspective on the discussion and the Seeing Gender Activities. The journal entries are really nice because it's just another place for me to express my thoughts. Expressing thoughts in the virtual learning is very difficult and I love all the opportunities we have to share our thoughts."

"I have really enjoyed the synchronous Seeing Gender activities. I like the discussion with my peers and Nona and find the activities to be well-organized and engaging."

Qualitative Feedback
"I appreciate the research skills that learning to code has taught me. It's given me a new way of thinking and it's informed me on how to go about how I might go about my own research. Before this course, I'd have ideas about information/research I wanted to gather but didn't know how I would go about that process because it seemed like an overwhelming task."

"Nona is an excellent person to work under. She is clear about expectations, encouraging, understanding, and driven."

"The readings always added to my experience and it felt especially topical given the political climate and our Dept of Education right now. I feel like I understand so much more about the history of campus sexual assault. "

History of Men's Engagement in Anti-Violence Work: Fall 2019-Spring 2020

I supervised two undergraduate Men's Engagement Coordinators as they learned about the history of men's engagement in anti-violence work and developed a presentation focused on such efforts at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 2000 through 2020.
